The team at the Experimental Gambling Research Laboratory at CQUniversity do some fantastic research, often based around the Qualtrics research platform.

I share tips and how-to videos on my YouTube channel. Please feel very free to like, share and subscribe.

If you have any questions or requests, please feel free to contact me.

INTRODUCTION TO QUALTRICS

The first 10 videos are a series, designed to introduce you to the platform in general. I cover everything from the basic interface to creating your survey, testing it, distributing it, and downloading your data.

There’s a lot more to learn, but this should get your started.

CQU Qualtrics 101 - 1/10 - The Qualtrics Interface

This is video 1 (of 10) introducing Qualtrics to CQUni users. In this video, I demonstrate the basic user interface.

CQU Qualtrics 101 - 2/10 - Basic question types.

This is video 2 (of 10) introducing Qualtrics to CQUni users. In this video, I describe blocks and questions, and show you how to create two basic question types: a text-only question, and a consent question. I also show you how to turn on forced response, and describe why it might be useful. I also show you how to format text, include adding hyperlinks, through the Rich Content Editor.

CQU Qualtrics 101 - 3/10 - More question types and recoding variables

This is video 3 (of 10) introducing Qualtrics to CQUni users. In this video, I show you a few new question types, including single answer, open-ended text (with numeric validation), and multiple answer. Each works a little differently. I also show an exclusive answer option with one of the questions, and I’ll show you how to recode values so that your data are ready to go for analysis.

CQU Qualtrics 101 - 4/10 - Matrix tables, display logic, skip logic

This is video 4 (of 10) introducing Qualtrics to CQUni users. In this video, I show you a new, and very useful, question type in matrix tables. I also show you how to use skip logic and display logic. This allows you to show someone a question (or not) based on their previous answers.

CQU Qualtrics 101 - 5/10 - Scales and scoring

This is video 5 (of 10) introducing Qualtrics to CQUni users. In this video, I outline some examples of what you can do with scales in a Qualtrics survey, including scoring a scale within the survey. These scores can then be used to determine who sees certain questions.

CQU Qualtrics 101 - 6/10 - Piped text and carrying forward response options

This is video 6 (of 10) introducing Qualtrics to CQUni users. In this video, I show you some more advanced options, like how to carry forward answers from a previous question, using display logic for response options (rather than whole questions), and piped text. Piped text is a particularly powerful tool, so hopefully you’ll see some of the value here!

CQU Qualtrics 101 - 7/10 - Survey flow and embedded data

This is video 7 (of 10) introducing Qualtrics to CQUni users. In this video, I introduce you to survey flow. I’ll show you how to screen people out of the survey if they say no to the consent form, and how to use things like branch logic and embedded data. Survey flow is one of the things that sets Qualtrics apart from many other platforms. I’ll also show you examples of what you can do when you screen people out of a survey.

CQU Qualtrics 101 - 8/10 - Testing your survey before you launch

This is video 8 (of 10) introducing Qualtrics to CQUni users. In this video, I show you some settings that can make testing easier, how to share (collaborate) your survey with colleagues, how to preview your survey, and how to run test responses through your survey. Test responses in particular are super useful.

CQU Qualtrics 101 - 9/10 - Distributing your survey

This is video 9 (of 10) introducing Qualtrics to CQUni users. In this video, I show you some settings that you might want to set on your survey before you send it out to people. Then I show you where to find your survey link. In future videos, I’ll show more about sending videos out to people via email from within Qualtrics.

IMPORTANT: Before distributing your survey, you might want to look at my Bot Detection video.

CQU Qualtrics 101 - 10/10 - Downloading your data

This is video 10 (of 10) introducing Qualtrics to CQUni users. In this video, I show you how to close your survey, and I h how to download your data. Note that I strongly recommend downloading data in SPSS format, even if you don’t like using SPSS for analysis. I also show you what the data look like, using the test data generated in the eighth video.

Here is the data file, and here is the survey file. You can upload the survey file into your own Qualtrics account if you wish.

And here’s an R script to import SPSS data into R, if that’s your jam. Thanks to Professor Matthew Browne for the script.

STANDALONE VIDEOS

The videos below require some knowledge of Qualtrics. Some of this is covered in the videos above, so you might want to watch them first if you’re new to the platform.

CQU Qualtrics 101 - Randomiser, or running experiments in Qualtrics

This video covers the randomiser function in survey flow in Qualtrics. I use it to show an example of how to run a basic experimental design in a Qualtrics survey. The benefit of being able to do this is that it allows for you to run experiments that might otherwise require additional software to perform, and to do it all within an online survey, making it easy for participants and for researchers.

In this video, I mention an R script for importing SPSS-formatted data into R. Here ‘tis. Thanks to Professor Matthew Browne for his work on this script.

CQU Qualtrics 101 - Capturing contact information within a survey, including how to deidentify and then reidentify responses

Sometimes in surveys, you need to capture someone's contact information, maybe to follow them up later, or to run a prize draw. Often, you'll want to capture that information separately from the rest of their survey responses. I show you how to do this with a customised end of survey element in survey flow, as well as how to validate their email addresses to reduce the risk of typos.

And sometimes, you might want to be able to reidentify someone's responses based on their contact details, so you can link their future responses. I also show you how to do that in this video.

CQU Qualtrics - BOT DETECTION, OR HOW TO PROTECT YOUR SURVEY FROM BOTS

Bots are becoming more common with surveys, especially those that are incentivised with prize draws or payment for completion. In this video I show some of the current (as of March 2021) bot and fraud detection tools in Qualtrics, including: Prevent Ballot Box Stuffing, Bot Detection (via Recaptcha), Email Scan Roadblock and RelevantID.

You can either decide to use these to disallow access to a survey for any response that fails these tests, or just capture the data from these tools to decide what to do with flagged responses afterwards, during data analysis. But note that you might not always want these tools on, and I give an example of that in the video.

CQU Qualtrics - Email triggers, or how to send an email to yourself or a respondent from a survey

Sometimes you might want to send an email to yourself or a respondent based on something that has happened in a survey. In this video, I show an example of an abstract submission form for a conference, and set up triggers so that I get an email when someone submits an abstract, and also so that the respondent gets a record of their submission too. Then, I look at conditions to show how we might use an email trigger to tell someone who has started submission that we haven't received their abstract yet, just in case they thought it was submitted.

I also talk about email settings, which will depend on your IT department allowing Qualtrics access to emails. Note at CQUni, we need to use name@SURVEYS.cqu.edu.au , due to an IT restriction, but we will still receive any replies to this version of our email address.

CQU Qualtrics - NEW USER INTERFACE (MARCH 2021) - WHAT’S MOVED WHERE

Qualtrics has announced a new user interface. For details, please see here: https://www.qualtrics.com/support/sur...

In this video I outline the main changes, which mostly involve the movement of the buttons for Look and Feel, Survey Flow, and Survey Options. Some other changes include moving the details about each question (e.g., validation) from the left to the right. Most things still operate in much the same way.

I will be rerecording my previous videos with the new interface soon. Watch this space.

CQU Qualtrics - fixing formatting issues

Have you copied text into Qualtrics, say from a Word document, only to find that the formatting is all over the shop?

Here’s how you fix it.

CQU Qualtrics - Sharing surveys, or collaboration

How do you share surveys with others? And how do you make sure that others have access to as many features as possible?

I cover all of that in this video, along with some special tips for collaborations within CQU (or within any organisation that uses SSO login).
